Dear members and friends of the UN Global Compact

At the end of this year, we would like to thank you all for your support and your engagement. It is really encouraging to work with you and witness your commitment towards the 10 UN Global Compact Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals. We are looking forward to collaborating with you even more in the next year.

what happened in our network

Services for our members

2018 was a rich and diversified year for the Global Compact Network Switzerland. The partnership with the Swiss Federal Administration was continued. We had many Sharing & Learning lunches around sustainability reporting and the SDGs, Webinars, UNGC Trainings and various events on Human Rights due diligence as well as women empowerment.


New Strategy by the UNGC

The new roll-out strategy by the UNGC was successfully implemented. So far, 95% of the Swiss member companies have chosen their engagement tier and are now also members of our local network.


Launch of the Tour de Suisse series 

One of our highlights was the launch of the Tour de Suisse series on Responsible Business in June 2018 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. We went on to have another 2 successful events in Neuchâtel and Ticino and 4 more events are in the pipeline for 2019.
The movie "A journey through Swiss Sustainable Business" was produced for the Tour de Suisse.

what happened in switzerland

The Federal Administration presented the country report 2018 on Switzerland's implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development  at the UN High Level Political Forum in New York in July. The GCNS contributed to the report as a part of the Working Group.

In October 2018, Professor Christine Kaufmann was appointed as new Chair of the OECD Working Party on Responsible Business. Ms. Kaufmann will lead the WPRBC in promoting the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, covering all key areas of corporate responsibility.

The UN Forum on Business and Human Rights successfully took place in Geneva at the Palais des Nations from the 26th- 28th November 2018. 
At a government session, Switzerland presented their activites towards the implementation of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights with a special mention for the GCNS.

The FDFA and SECO launched the first sector guidance for best practices in the respect of human rights specifically designed for commodity trading.
The Guidance is in conformity with the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights as well as related to the OECD Due Diligence Guidances.

GCNS and öbu are setting up a closed Working Group on Sustainable Supply Chains. The Kick-off Meeting is scheduled for February 2019.

Along with that, GCNS is also part of the UNGC Action Platform on Decent Work in Global Supply Chains. The aim of this platform is to foster leadership, learn and share across sectors, establish good practice, identify and incubate innovative solutions and measure impact in the areas of modern slavery, social dialogue and the future of work.

We will continue with our Tour de Suisse series on Responsible Business. In 2019, we will make a halt in at least 4 different cities and conduct events there.

The critical dilemma dialogues as well as the 3rd Swiss Global Compact Dialogue, Sharing & Learnings and trainings are currently being planned. More information to follow soon.


In order to better support our members, practical tools and existing instruments will be made accessible on our website as well as in our newsletters.

This month we present you the guideline on Human Rights & grievance mechanism developed by the Global Compact Germany.

We are in discussions with AIESEC Switzerland to plan collabarative opportunities. In order to be able to reach the students and broaden our stakeholder base, we will be present at the Career Days 2019 in Zurich and Lugano. More information to follow soon. 


Human Rights: The Foundation of Sustainable Business

The report highlights insight and initiatives by Global Compact Local Networks around the world, presents snapshots of good practices from member companies and showcases initiatives that are advancing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

2018 UNGC Progress Report: Business Solutions to Sustainable Development

This report confirms that about 80% of companies participating in the UNGC are taking action to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals and 66% are addressing the Global Goals through adherence to our Ten Principles as the first essential step.
