Water Stewardship

Water is the most important resource on our planet - both for humans and ecosystems. Access to clean water is a human right and is also hugely important for economic development. Megatrends such as the growing world population, the rising global standard of living, and the associated increase in demand for water from households and agricultural and industrial production are increasing the pressure on freshwater resources and leading to overuse in many places. Increasing variability in water availability resulting in global warming further exacerbates this problem, as does increased pollution.

Water consumption is not only an ecological issue but can also pose a business risk, for example, due to supply or production bottlenecks or rising production costs resulting in water scarcity. Water pollution by suppliers or upstream suppliers can also lead to risks for business activities, for example, due to fines resulting from breaches of the law and other legal consequences or loss of image due to negative media reports.

Nevertheless, water stewardship has so far been treated less strategically and risk-related in most companies than, for example, the management of energy and greenhouse gas emissions. Companies have a lot of room to improve water management and use water resources sparingly. As water is a local resource, its management must take into account the available sources, the quality of local water reserves, and the different users in the water catchment area. Therefore, risk analysis is the starting point for any strategic approach to water management, based on which an appropriate water management strategy can be developed and successful measures implemented.
