Ocean Stewardship
Oceans are crucial to the well-being and prosperity of humankind - whether for the production of food, energy, raw materials or transport. They play a critical and unique role in addressing the twin crises of biodiversity and climate change that threaten our very existence. But the oceans are in urgent need of protection and restoration. Covering some 70% of the earth’s surface, oceans are threatened by rising temperatures, acidification, extraction and depletion of resources, and pollution in many forms.
Research shows ocean mitigation solutions could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions gap by as much as one-fifth as we seek a path to limiting global temperatures to a 1.5° C increase by 2050. Businesses can often have a direct or indirect impact on the oceans and have a responsibility to work together towards sustainable ocean management. By doing so, they can both reduce their impact on the oceans and create new business opportunities in the long term.
In collaboration with over 300 stakeholders, the UN Global Compact has developed nine Sustainable Ocean Principles that provide companies with a framework for responsible business practices. By signing the principles, companies can set an example and receive a framework for integrating ocean-related challenges into their strategy.
